Can flat ribbon cable be made to a UL specification?

Yes. Flat cable can be manufactured to a construction covered by a UL Appliance Wiring Material (AWM) Style, provided the finished wire meets that Style's requirements and is produced within the scope of a valid certification. The word "flat" describes its shape; it does not establish a UL rating.

This distinction matters when sourcing cable for equipment sold into North America. A buyer may ask for "UL flat cable," while the engineering team needs a specific temperature rating, voltage rating, flame performance and method of installation. Those details determine which cable construction is suitable and what certification evidence the supplier should provide.

What does UL 758 cover?

UL 758 is the standard used for Appliance Wiring Material, commonly called AWM. AWM Styles describe constructions and conditions for wire and cable intended for use as components in equipment. They are not interchangeable labels that can be added to any cable of a similar appearance.

Flat constructions do exist within the AWM system. For example, UL Style descriptions include bonded flat ribbon cable and laminated flat cable. Each Style has its own construction and ratings. A cable should be identified by the Style under which its particular construction is covered, rather than by choosing a familiar Style number for a quotation.

AWM component recognition also has limits. It does not mean that the finished device, or every assembly containing that wire, has been UL Listed. The equipment manufacturer still needs to assess whether the component is suitable for the intended use and for any certification requirements applying to the end product.

Flat ribbon cable, FFC and cable assemblies

These names are sometimes used loosely in purchase requests, although they can describe different constructions.

Product Typical construction What needs checking
Bonded flat ribbon cable Insulated conductors held side by side Conductor size and count, insulation, ratings and the applicable AWM Style
Flat flexible cable (FFC) Flat conductors within a thin laminated structure Conductor and laminate construction, exposed ends, ratings and the specific certified design
Jacketed flat multiconductor cable Several conductors in a flat cable structure with an outer jacket Jacket and insulation materials, dimensions, ratings and the applicable Style
Terminated flat cable assembly Cable fitted with contacts, connectors or other end parts Certification scope of the cable and any separate requirements for the completed assembly

An FFC and a bonded ribbon cable may have the same number of conductors and a similar pitch, yet use different materials and manufacturing processes. They should not be treated as the same certified product. Likewise, buying recognized wire does not automatically extend that recognition to a connector added later.

What should be specified before asking for a quote?

Start with the installation. Will the cable remain inside an enclosed device, cross a moving hinge, or connect to an external module? AWM Styles have defined uses and ratings, so the intended application should be established before selecting one.

The drawing or purchase specification should then state:

Cable construction, conductor count and pitch

Conductor material and size or cross section

Insulation and, where applicable, jacket materials

Required temperature and voltage ratings

Flame performance required by the equipment design

Cable length, exposed conductor length and termination method

Static or repeated bending requirements

The exact AWM Style and certification file number, if already specified by the customer

If the customer has named a Style, check its construction requirements against the proposed cable. A request for a higher temperature rating, different laminate or altered conductor size may require a different certified construction. Material substitutions should be reviewed before production, not after the cable has been marked.

How should a buyer verify a UL claim?

Ask which company holds the certification, the applicable Style and file number, and whether the quoted cable is covered by that company's certified construction. The current certification record can be checked in UL Solutions' Product iQ database. Marking and traceability documents should match the material supplied.

For a terminated assembly, ask a separate question: What exactly is certified? The answer might be the cable only, a particular connector component, or the completed assembly under an applicable program. A UL mark on the cable cannot be used as proof that the full cable-and-connector assembly is UL Listed.

This is especially relevant when a flat cable feeds a custom magnetic connector or pogo pin interface. We can work from customer drawings to develop the contact layout, termination and mating structure as part of the connection solution. The cable's AWM status and the certification status of the finished assembly must still be identified separately in the project documentation.

FAQ

Can PVC flat ribbon cable be made to a UL AWM Style?

Yes, if its conductor, insulation and overall construction meet the requirements of an applicable Style and the manufacturer's certified scope. PVC material alone does not establish compliance.

Can FFC receive UL recognition?

Flat laminated cable constructions can fall within the AWM system. The specific FFC design must be checked against an applicable Style and a valid certification record; the name "FFC" is not a certification.

Does using UL Recognized cable make the whole cable assembly UL Listed?

No. Recognition of the cable applies to the certified component within its stated conditions. A terminated assembly and the finished equipment may have separate evaluation requirements.

What documents should a buyer request?

Request the AWM Style, certification file number, relevant ratings and product identification that ties the delivered cable to the certified construction. For a terminated assembly, also request a clear statement of which parts, if any, are covered by certification.
