Last week, a client manufacturing TWS earbud charging cases asked me on WhatsApp: "Can your charging pin connectors be supplied on tape and reels?" Their factory had just installed SMT (Surface Mount Technology) machines, and the boss had issued a strict mandate: all components must be SMT-compatible-no manual soldering allowed.


I've been asked this type of question over two hundred times. The answer is simple: yes, they can. But it's not as straightforward as just deciding to do it; there are pitfalls involved. I'll walk you through them based on the lessons I've learned the hard way.


What works for tape-and-reel, and what's not worth the effort


Let's start with what works. SMD pogo pins-single pins with a flat soldering pad at the base-are the standard choice for tape-and-reel packaging; you can produce them with your eyes closed. Then there are connector arrays with plastic bases-like the four-pin charging connectors used in smartbands. They have flat bottoms and a low center of gravity, making the tape-and-reel process and machine placement run smoothly.


Now, for what's not worth the effort: high-current pin connectors-the kind used in EV charging piles or energy storage cabinets. They have large diameters, and some even feature flanges or threads. Why try to put these on an SMT machine? It's better to stick to trays or blister packs; the client usually assembles them manually anyway, so tape-and-reel packaging would just be a waste of money.


There's another scenario where things often go wrong: pins that are too tall. For instance, a pin with a working stroke exceeding 10mm has a slender barrel and a high center of gravity. Once taped, it wobbles inside the pocket, causing the SMT machine's nozzle to pick it up off-center. We once ran into this issue with a medical product; the components were perfect and the taping looked great, but the client experienced a placement offset rate of over 8%. We ended up having to take the whole batch back and re-tape it. So, during the prototyping phase, always calculate the pocket clearance carefully.


Clarify these parameters before taping


Many purchasers think tape-and-reel packaging just means stuffing the product into a plastic strip, but it's far more complex. If you fail to confirm even one of the following parameters, you could run into problems during machine placement:


Carrier tape width. 8mm is usually sufficient for small charging pin connectors, while larger modules require 12mm or 16mm.


Pocket depth. The pocket depth should be 0.3 to 0.5 mm greater than the total height of the product; if it's too shallow, the ejector pin will crush the part, and if it's too deep, the pick-and-place nozzle won't pick it up reliably.


Cover tape peel force: Industry standards range from 10 to 60 gf, though the exact figure depends on the customer's nozzle vacuum parameters.
Pin 1 orientation: If installed backward, the SMT machine will trigger an alarm and stop; a one-hour production line stoppage for the customer results in a penalty you'll never forget.


A quick reminder: Taping is one thing, and moisture protection is another. Pogo pins containing plastic components must still be baked according to their moisture sensitivity level (MSL) and packaged with vacuum bags, desiccant, and humidity indicator cards. Taping does not replace moisture protection measures-this is exactly what customer engineers check most frequently during factory audits.

Why are customers so desperate for tape-and-reel packaging these days?


Put simply: manual labor is too expensive.
Take that TWS customer I mentioned earlier-they ran the numbers for me: manually soldering a single charging connector (including training and defect costs) resulted in a total cost of nearly 0.1 RMB per solder joint. After switching to SMT, the machine places hundreds per minute, making the allocated cost almost negligible. Their boss put it this way: the SMT machine pays for itself in a year, and everything after that is pure profit.
That's why I understand why the question "Do you support tape-and-reel?" appears so frequently in inquiries now. Five years ago, maybe two or three out of ten inquiries asked about it; now, practically everyone does. That's the nature of the industry-automation is forcing upstream suppliers to change their packaging methods.

Do prototypes need to be taped?

Yes. Establishing taping specifications during the prototyping stage allows you to verify SMT programming early on-it's far cheaper than running into disaster during mass production.


What is the MOQ?

It varies by supplier. Taping involves machine setup costs, so the minimum is usually 20,000 units. Below that number, loose parts or small trays are more cost-effective.


Will the ejector pin crush the part?

A proper tape design won't crush the product; the pocket cavity is designed with sufficient clearance. A closing thought:
